The waters surrounding Key West are full of reef spots ranging in size and depth from a few hundred feet long to over a mile. They provide ample cover for both bait fish and the large game fish which feed on them including Black, Red and Goliath Grouper, Barracuda Yellowtail and Mutton Snappers. The preferred method of catching these fish is to create a chum line to draw the fish away from reef and develop a competitive feeding atmosphere. Sending live or dead bait to the bottom through the chum leads to fast and furious action. These spots are 20 minutes to one hour off shore. They are so numerous that they are seldom fished twice in a month resulting in great fish numbers and non-stop action. These are the perfect trips for the novice angler and the family. Everyone will catch fish and learn how to set the hook. Do not be surprised if you hook a Bill Fish or a King Fish while at the reef as they often cruise these waters in search of an easy meal. If you are interested in keeping a few fish for the table, this is the trip for you. Please keep in mind that the fishing in Key West has been getting better each year due to improved municipal waste water management and Catch and Release practices. Twenty years ago, all of the fish caught were kept. This eventually resulted in a decline of fish populations and in a total change of fishing practices. While the ocean is large, it is not inexhaustible. Maintaining this beautiful and productive fishery is up to all of us. Please help to do your part.
